  1. A bayonet is a short sword attached to the
  2. muzzle of a firearm. The bayonet was placed
  3. inside the barrel of the muzzleloading 
  4. muskets of the late 17th century. The sock 
  5. or ring bayonet was invented in 1700, and 
  6. allowed a weapon to be fired without 
  7. interruption. Although many military leaders
  8. have advocated the use of the bayonet, in 
  9. practice it has been rarely used. The new 
  10. British Army rifle, the SA-80, is fitted with
  11. a bayonet.
